Nintendo has officially unveiled the first images from the upcoming live-action The Legend of Zelda movie, giving fans their first glimpse of Link and Princess Zelda on the big screen.
The reveal came on November 17, 2025, through Nintendo’s official channels, including the Nintendo Today app and social media, with the already classic "This is Miyamoto" introduction. The three images showcase actors Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link and Bo Bragason as Princess Zelda, both dressed in costumes that closely resemble their iconic video game counterparts. Ainsworth is seen wearing the legendary green tunic and white undershirt, while Bragason appears with her bow and Hylian ears, signaling a faithful adaptation of the beloved characters.
The photos also highlight the lush landscapes of New Zealand, where filming is currently underway. This location choice is no coincidence: New Zealand famously served as the backdrop for The Lord of the Rings films, and its sweeping plains and dramatic scenery are now being transformed into Hyrule. One of the released shots shows Link and Zelda gazing across a vast, green field, instantly evoking the adventurous spirit of the franchise.
The movie is directed by Wes Ball, known for The Maze Runner trilogy and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Ball has previously stated that his vision is to create a film that feels like a “live-action Miyazaki,” drawing inspiration from the fantastical yet emotional storytelling of Studio Ghibli. The screenplay is written by Derek Connolly, who worked on Jurassic World, while Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto is deeply involved in the project, ensuring authenticity and creative oversight.
Fans have been quick to notice the attention to detail in the costumes and setting, praising the production for staying true to the source material. At the same time, Miyamoto has emphasized that the film will not simply retell the plot of any single Zelda game. Instead, it will craft a new story inspired by the series’ themes of courage, adventure, and the eternal battle between good and evil.
The Legend of Zelda movie was first announced in November 2023, and after years of anticipation, production is finally in full swing. The film is scheduled for release on May 7, 2027, giving fans plenty of time to speculate about which elements of the sprawling Zelda universe will make it to the screen.
Nintendo and Sony Pictures, yes let's not forget Sony is into this, have set the stage for one of the most ambitious video game adaptations ever attempted. The combination of a seasoned director, a dedicated cast, and Nintendo’s close involvement suggests that this project aims to capture the magic of Hyrule in a way that resonates with both longtime fans and newcomers alike.
