After so many rumors, Nintendo has officially confirmed its lead casting for the upcoming live action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda. In a social media announcement, via Nintendo Today and other social networks, Nintendo veteran Shigeru Miyamoto revealed that Bo Bragason will portray Princess Zelda, while Benjamin Evan Ainsworth takes on the role of Link. The film is slated to premiere in theaters on May 7, 2027, and marks a major step in Nintendo’s expansion into large-scale cinematic storytelling.
Bo Bragason, aged 21, has already built a diverse background in film and television. She appeared in Netflix’s fantasy series Renegade Nell and earned acclaim for her role in BBC’s murder mystery miniseries The Jetty. Bragason also lent her motion capture talents to Square Enix’s CGI film Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV, playing Young Luna. Her casting signals Nintendo’s preference for actors who combine youthful energy with the fantasy genre.
At just 16 years old, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth brings both gravitas and fresh talent to the role of Link. Ainsworth first captured attention as Miles Wingrave in Netflix’s The Haunting of Bly Manor and later voiced Pinocchio in Disney’s live action remake opposite Tom Hanks. His growing body of work, including roles in Son of a Critch and Everything’s Going to Be Great!, underscores his range and makes him a compelling choice for the heroic Hylian protagonist.
Behind the camera, the film is co-produced by Shigeru Miyamoto and Marvel veteran Avi Arad, with Sony Pictures Entertainment co-financing and distributing. Jurassic World co-writer Derek Connolly penned the screenplay, while Wes Ball, director of the Planet of the Apes reboot, will helm the project. Nintendo delayed the original March 2027 release date to May 7 to avoid competing blockbusters and to ensure extra production polish.
News outlets and fans alike have greeted the casting announcement with excitement and relief. After the record breaking success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Nintendo is under pressure to deliver another faithful, high quality adaptation. We praise the choice of lesser known but experienced actors, and we really hope this fresh approach will honor the series legacy and resonate with both longtime enthusiasts and newcomers
